Herbal salves are semi-solid blends of oil and natural wax infused with herbs. They provide a convenient way to apply the therapeutic properties of plants directly to the skin and are commonly used for dry skin, minor cuts and scrapes, burns, rashes, sore muscles, and other topical concerns.
What You Will Need
Herbs (dried) – Select herbs based on their intended use:
- Calendula – supports skin healing and soothes irritation
- Lavender – helps calm skin irritation
- Comfrey – supports muscle recovery and bruising
- Plantain – relieves insect bites, stings, and itching
- Chamomile – suitable for inflamed or sensitive skin
Carrier Oil – Serves as the base for the infusion. Options include:
- Olive oil (stable and nourishing)
- Sweet almond oil
- Sunflower oil
- Grapeseed oil
Wax – Provides structure to the salve:
- Beeswax (traditional)
- Candelilla wax (vegan alternative)
Equipment
- Double boiler or heat-safe bowl and pot
- Cheesecloth or muslin for straining
- Clean jars or tins for storage
- Optional: essential oils for fragrance
Step 1: Infuse the Oil
Slow Method
- Place dried herbs in a clean glass jar and cover with oil.
- Store in a warm area for 3–4 weeks, shaking gently every day.
- Strain through cheesecloth and press to extract the oil.
Quick Method
- Place herbs and oil in a double boiler.
- Warm on the lowest heat for 1–2 hours without boiling.
- Strain through cheesecloth and press to extract the oil.
Step 2: Make the Salve
- Combine 1 cup of infused oil with approximately ¼ cup of wax.
- Warm over low heat until the wax is fully melted.
- Remove from heat and add optional essential oils.
- Pour into jars or tins while warm and allow to solidify.
- Label with herbs used and date; store in a cool, dark place. Shelf life is up to one year.
